Duplex 2205 vs Super Duplex 2507: A Technical Comparison for Grade Selection
Choosing between two duplex grades looks simple on paper, but it shapes the cost, weight and service life of an entire project. Pumps, piping, heat exchangers and offshore structures all depend on a material that can carry load and resist chlorides at the same time.
Duplex 2205 vs Super Duplex 2507 is the comparison most engineers and buyers face first. Both grades share the same two-phase ferritic-austenitic structure. The real difference lies in how much alloy each one carries, and how much corrosion margin that buys you.
The Challenge of Choosing the Right Duplex Grade
Over-specifying wastes money. Under-specifying leads to pitting, leaks and early replacement. Most selection mistakes come from comparing grade names instead of service conditions.
Before choosing, a project team usually needs clear answers on:
- Chloride level of the process fluid or seawater
- Operating temperature and any thermal cycling
- Design pressure and required wall thickness
- Welding and fabrication requirements
- Budget and availability of product forms
Why Composition Decides the Outcome
Alloy 2205 (UNS S32205 / S31803) contains roughly 22–23% chromium, 3.0–3.5% molybdenum and 0.14–0.20% nitrogen. Alloy 2507 (UNS S32750) raises this to about 24–26% chromium, 3–5% molybdenum and 0.24–0.32% nitrogen.
That extra alloy content lifts the pitting resistance number from around 35 for 2205 to 41 or higher for 2507. In practical terms:
- 2205 handles brackish water, many chemical streams and moderate chlorides
- 2507 is built for seawater, hot brine and aggressive chloride service
- 2507 offers higher yield strength for thinner, lighter sections
- 2205 costs less and is easier to source in every product form
This is the core of Super Duplex 2507 grade selection: pay for alloy only where the environment demands it.
Mechanical Strength Compared
Duplex 2205 mechanical properties already beat 316L comfortably. Typical minimums are about 450 MPa yield and 620–655 MPa tensile strength, roughly double the yield of standard austenitic grades.
Super duplex goes further, with around 550 MPa yield and 795–800 MPa tensile strength. For high-pressure piping and structural members, this can reduce wall thickness and weight. Both grades keep useful toughness down to about −50°C.
Corrosion Resistance in Chloride Service
Duplex 2205 corrosion resistance is strong against general corrosion, pitting and chloride stress corrosion cracking. It performs well in many process plants, wastewater systems and brackish water lines.
In natural seawater, especially when warm or chlorinated, 2205 can be at risk of crevice attack. Super duplex 2507 has a much higher critical pitting temperature, so it remains the safer choice for seawater cooling, firewater and SWRO high-pressure piping. Our guide to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking explains these mechanisms in more detail.
Fabrication, Welding and Temperature Limits
Both grades weld well when heat input and interpass temperature are controlled. Super duplex is less forgiving because its higher alloy content makes sigma phase form faster. Qualified procedures and suitable overalloyed fillers matter for both — see our note on duplex stainless steel welding.
Neither grade suits long-term service much above about 250–300°C. Above this range, embrittlement can reduce toughness, so nickel alloys are usually considered instead.
Standards and Product Forms
Both grades are covered by the same family of ASTM standards: A240 for plate, A276 and A479 for bars, A790 for pipe and A182 for forgings and flanges. Full standard texts are available from ASTM International. Our article on ASTM A790, A182 and A240 explains how they connect. Always state the UNS number on the purchase order, since S31803 and S32205 differ slightly in chemistry.
Long-Term Cost Savings
Duplex vs super duplex cost should be judged over the full life of the asset, not just the purchase order. The right grade pays back through:
- Fewer corrosion failures and unplanned shutdowns
- Thinner walls and lower weight from higher strength
- Reduced inspection and maintenance effort
- Longer replacement intervals
Choosing 2205 where it is adequate, and 2507 only where it is needed, gives the best balance for most Duplex 2205 vs Super Duplex 2507 decisions.
Sustainability and Industry Trends
Plant owners now look closely at lifecycle impact. Longer-lasting materials mean fewer replacements, less scrap and lower embodied carbon over the life of a plant. Duplex grades also use less nickel than equivalent austenitic grades, which helps when nickel prices swing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the main difference in Duplex 2205 vs Super Duplex 2507?
Super duplex 2507 contains more chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, giving higher strength and much better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater.
Q2. Is Duplex 2205 suitable for seawater?
It can work in some cooler, controlled seawater systems, but super duplex 2507 is the usual choice for warm or chlorinated seawater.
Q3. How do Duplex 2205 mechanical properties compare with 316L?
Duplex 2205 has roughly double the yield strength of 316L, which often allows thinner walls and lighter designs.
Q4. Is super duplex always worth the higher cost?
No. Super Duplex 2507 grade selection makes sense only where chloride levels or temperatures exceed what 2205 can safely handle.
Q5. Can Zeon Exports supply both grades in different product forms?
Yes. Zeon Exports supplies 2205 and 2507 in bars, plates, pipes, fittings, flanges and fasteners, with mill test certificates.
