Alloy 2507/F53 is a super duplex stainless steel consisting of a balanced mix of austenitic and ferritic microstructures. This dual-phase structure gives it a significant edge over conventional stainless steels. The alloy contains high amounts of chromium (24–26%), molybdenum (3–5%), and nitrogen, which together provide superior protection against chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.
It is designated as UNS S32750 or F53 under ASTM/ASME standards.
Key Properties of Alloy 2507
Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to a wide range of corrosive
environments, especially chlorides.
High Strength: Superior mechanical strength, offering approximately double the yield strength compared to standard austenitic stainless steels
Excellent Weldability: Suitable for most welding processes with proper filler materials and precautions.
Outstanding Fatigue Resistance: Withstands cyclic loading, making it reliable for offshore structures.
Thermal Conductivity: Higher than that of austenitic grades, improving heat transfer performance.
Thanks to its robust properties, Alloy 2507 is widely used in industries that demand
durability and corrosion resistance:
Offshore platforms and subsea equipment
Heat exchangers and pressure vessels
Pulp and paper industry bleaching plants
Desalination plants and seawater systems
Flue-gas cleaning equipment
Chemical processing equipment
Though tougher than traditional stainless steels, Alloy 2507 can be machined using standard practices, but it may require more power and slower speeds. Welding must be handled carefully to avoid loss of corrosion resistance at the heat-affected zones. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are generally not required but recommended in some critical applications.
